The European Journalism Centre awards 15 journalists to report on gender equality

Fifteen innovative journalism projects that address gender equality issues will jointly receive €293.000 in reporting grants as part of the ninth round of the Innovation in Development Reporting (IDR) Grant Programme run by the European Journalism Centre (EJC).

The winning projects will touch upon multiple compelling issues affecting women and girls worldwide such as: access to education for girls, violence against women, abortions, maternal mortality, contraceptives, women leaders, child brides, digital sexism, men’s role in women’s empowerment, and the IT gender gap.

The awarded projects have received endorsement from significant media outlets such as BBC, Bild, Buzzfeed News, Channel 4 News, CNN International, De Correspondent, Der Spiegel, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Libération, Marie Claire, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Sunday Mirror, Svenska Dagbladet, The New Statesman, Time Magazine, TV5Monde, Vice, and many others.

The winners were chosen because of their solid story ideas and innovative multi-platform approaches, operating on the crossroads between investigative, data-driven and visual journalism. To convey complex development stories in engaging ways, the winning projects will make use of web-documentaries, graphic animations, 360-degree videos, drone and data journalism and more.

The winners will join a boot camp training on 27-28 June, in Hamburg, Germany, where they will meet fellow grantees and learn from top-level media practitioners. They will work on the development of their stories, learn about leveraging multimedia storytelling techniques and develop publication strategies aimed at achieving the best possible public impact. As part of the programme, the winners will also attend the News Impact Summit organised by the European Journalism Centre in cooperation with the Google News Lab.

The ninth call for applications ran between 10 November 2016 and 15 February 2017. In total, 128 applications were received. The final winners were selected during a meeting of the IDR Grant Programme Advisory Council, consisting of senior international journalists. The projects that are eligible for funding will be green-lighted upon signature of a legal contract.

In 2017-2018, the EJC is awarding over €1.6 million in funding for innovative development journalism projects. To this end, the EJC will run another special funding round for media outlets as well as several calls for applications centred on specific international development topics. The EJC will open several new calls for applications in the coming weeks. Project name: Rebelling And Rebuilding In Afghanistan: Stories of women fighting for their rights - and lives - in one of the most dangerous places on Earth
Team: Sophia Jones (Project lead), Sitara Sadaat, Kiana Hayeri
Description: This project intimately tells the stories of the women - especially mothers - struggling for their rights and a better future in a violent but changing Afghanistan, portraying them as active agents, not victims.

Project name: Crossing The River - Women In Myanmar Fighting Maternal Mortality

Description: This interactive web documentary follows the struggle for life of three midwives in Myanmar, where maternal mortality rate remains extremely high.

Project name: Where Women Make The Laws

Description: You will not expect Bolivia, the poorest country in South America, to have the most equalitarian parliament in the region and the second one in the world. But it does; more than 50% of the representatives in the national legislative assembly are women. Through a radio and audiovisual transmedia approach, this project portrays these Bolivian women and their challenges to document them to the world.

Project name: Big Men: East Africa’s Unlikely Feminists

Description: From pastors to police officers, Big Men tells the unexpected stories of men in Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya who are defying gender stereotypes and/or fighting for female empowerment. The project does so by using a multi-media mix, including scrollytelling and illustrations.

Project name: #Uburinganire! Conquering Gender Equality In Rwanda

Description: Since the end of the genocide, Rwanda has become Africa's gender equality's success story. We'll follow women in their twenties – first time voters in the upcoming presidential election, raised according to this new gender equality narrative - to understand what empowerment means to them, in the fields of politics, education, or sexual and reproductive rights.

Project name: Wives Of The Gods – Investigating Trokosi In West Africa

Description: Wives of the gods is a project about one woman's journey to investigate trokosi, a traditional practice in Togo and Ghana that forces women and girls into ritual servitude. How can gender equality be achieved whilst respecting the role of traditional practices?

Project name: The #130MillionGirls Challenge – How Keeping Girls In School Can Save The World

Description: Every day, for reasons such as sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy or war, 130 million girls are kept out of school. At the same time, research shows that female education is one of the keys for development. This project aims to portray this problem and solutions from different parts of the world, through in-depth journalism, an interactive online platform and a social media campaign.

Description: In 2016, 142 million women had an unmet need for modern methods of contraception, and 73% of them lived in the world's poorest countries. This project investigates this problem using a unique combination of in‐depth data journalism and personal storytelling.

Project name: When Women Rule

Project name: Coding Like A Girl

Description: Many African and Latin American countries are hastily closing the gender gap in the IT workforce. This project will examine successful projects in Rwanda and Peru and both scrutinise their impact on local development, and as well as compare them globally with similar programs from developed economies like Germany.

The Innovation in Development Reporting Grant Programme was launched in January 2013 by the EJC with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project aims to reward quality journalism and advance a new and distinctive agenda for development coverage through awarding funding to a selection of state-of-the-art reporting projects of great impact and high visibility. Since 2013 the programme granted funding to 130+ projects.

In 2015 the EJC launched a special edition of the IDR grant programme aimed at supporting long term global development coverage. Four major European news organisations (Spiegel Online, Welt/N24, Dagens Nyheter, De Correspondent) were each awarded grants worth €150.000.

In 2016 the EJC launched another special edition: the “Global Health Journalism Grant Programme for Germany”. This edition aims to advance a better coverage of international health, health policy and development related issues by supporting the production of stories that have a strong impact on media audiences in Germany.

During 2017-2018 the European Journalism Centre will award over €1.6 million in funding for innovative development journalism projects, as part of the most recent IDR programme extension from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2017 the programme will run two rounds of applications and organise two boot camp style trainings tailor-made for the winners of each round. A special funding round for media publishers will also be announced during the course of 2017.
