Togo and Ghana have come a long way in terms of gender equality. However, traditional practices such as trokosi continue to condemn thousands of women ritual servitude.
Brigitte Perenyi will return to her birthplace in rural Togo to explore the tensions between the fight for gender equality and the right to practice to traditional rituals. Brigitte was herself a trokosi slave, before being liberated and adopted following a chance appearance in a TV report in 1997.
She will meet other trokosi girls, return to her family who ‘gave her away’ and speak to traditional leaders who defend the practice.
